ArchivalResource

The inclined plane at Madison, Indiana, 1985.

The collection contains a photocopy of a paper by Russell Dougherty, "The Inclined Plane at Madison, Indiana." The paper discusses the rack and adhesion railroad necessary to climb the inclined plane at Madison, and the several railroad companies that used it. It also discusses the locomotive "Reuben Wells," now housed at the Indianapolis Children's Museum. The inclined plane at Madison is the steepest grade on a line haul in the world, and is one of the steepest standard gauge railroad grades ever built.
